History being made

Several notable events happened this past week.

First and foremost, ex-president Gerald Ford passed away last Tuesday at the age of 93. He's the first president I can remember seeing on tv when I was little. And, sadly, it wasn't until recently that I learned that he is/was the only person to hold the office of vice-president & president in US history that wasn't elected into either office. Apparently Nixon named him as his successor when he resigned. He was also the oldest living ex-president, after Reagan.

Also making news...

Saddam Hussein was executed last night around 10pm EST. Man alive, I realize I don't follow politics that much, but if ever there was someone that deserved what he got, then it was that ex-dictator.

On a much lighter note, if you ever want to laugh like crazy when playing a video game, I strongly urge you to try Wii's Rayman - Raving Rabbids. What a corny game! The whole game is pretty much made up of smaller mini-games. I always thought rabbits were cute, cuddly creatures. Not these suckers. LOL

Anyone else get the chance to play a game on the Wii yet?

Happy Holidays from the desert southwest!

Southwestern Snowman!
Everyone always asks me, when I tell them where I live, "How can you live there during the summer?" We tolerate the summer because the winters are so nice! We have the screen doors open, it's sunny, and around 70.

And, believe it or not, a lot of people here decorate their saguaro cacti. The first time I saw that I could only shake my head and say, "Old people. Don't let me get like that when I get that age." Now, owning a house down here, if one of those things were in my yard, sadly, I'd decorate it, too. I'm all for putting a ton of lights up! I think we've even inspired our stodgy older neighbors to put some lights up. Several houses which didn't have lights last year has some, to some extent, this year.

We had a nice visit with Jim & Stacey. We took 'em out to see Xmas lights around here, took 'em on a boat ride around the island, and played the Nintendo Wii. Got my butt kicked in Wii Bowling. Don't worry Jim, I'm practicing, waiting for a rematch! In the meantime, I get to kick Jamie's butt!!

We just finished watching the all-time great, most favorite Christmas movie of mine on DVD. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, starring Chevy Chase. Absolute classic. When he puts that slippery stuff on the bottom of his sled and slides down the hill in a streak of fire... Cracks me up!! Ranting and raving about his tightwad boss at the end of the movie. Longest string of insults I've ever heard in one sentence!

So what is everyone's favorite Holiday movie? You know mine! Christmas Vacation!

Hmmm, a football game is on. Buccaneers vs. Bears. Gotta love football season. Go Bucs!!

Funny name, very cool system!!

The Nintendo Wii, image courtesy of Nintendo
The Nintendo Wii. That's pronounced "we". Weird name to call a video game system. But as far as I'm concerned, that's one of the few drawbacks for this system. The other drawback that I noticed? Not having enough to go around to satisfy demand for this thing. It's the cheapest game console to hit the market ($250).

Ok. What's so cool about this thing is that the controllers are all wireless and have built-in motion sensors. Meaning if you want to play baseball, for example, you gotta swing the remote like a bat, much to the amusement of any friends/family that might be watching. The system we bought also had the well-known Zelda game. And yep, you guessed it. When fighting with the sword, you gotta treat the remote like a sword. In my case, it sure does make Giliane laugh when I'm trying to kill a bad guy.

I really like the Wii Bowling. Ok, I'll admit, I'm not that good of a bowler. And when I bowl for real, I always get a curve to the left. Well, I'll be damned if the virtual ball doesn't do the same damn thing. Very frustrating. Again, much to the amusement of Giliane (and Jamie). However, once you learn the nuances of it, the game really is a lot of fun.

Bottom line is this: If you want to get a game system where you hope to maintain a little bit of dignity, then this system ain't for you. On the other hand, if you're looking to have a good time and can laugh at yourself along with eveyrone else, I would highly recommend getting the Wii!

On a side note, we also purchased Excite Truck. Looks like a lot of fun. Once we get a chance to play it, we'll put some remarks in here.

Happy Holidays!!
